Brain Maker by David Perlmutter, MD with Kristin Loberg


This book provides a very readable and illuminating discussion of new research documenting how the health of the brain is dictated by the health of the microbiome.  Dr. Perlmutter discusses diseases such as ADHD, autism, chronic headache, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, and MS.  He relates in easy to understand terms how to improve and sustain a healthy gut microbiome.  


These are his six essential keys to sustaining a healthy microbiome:  

  1. Choose foods rich in probiotics such as fermented foods which include live-cultured yogurt, kefir, kimbucha tea, tempeh, kimchi, sauerkraut and pickles.
  2. Choose low glycemic index carbs and good fats to avoid gluten and swings in blood sugar.  The list includes vegetables, low sugar fruit, fermented foods, healthy fats and healthy protein.
  3. Enjoy red wine, coffee, tea and chocolate (in moderation).
  4. Choose foods rich in prebiotics (12 gms daily).
  5. Drink filtered water and reduce chemical exposures.
  6. Fast at least every season.


Supplements to consider:

  1. DHA 1000mg per day
  2. Tumeric 500mg twice a day
  3. Coconut oil 1-2 tsp per day
  4. Alpha lipoic acid 300mg per day
  5. Vitamin D (check levels) 5000 IU per day to start, then adjust based on levels


I found his case studies from his neurology practice fascinating.  There are many diets and many opinions, however, the premise of eating a healthy whole foods diet and making healthy lifestyle changes are the basis to improving health.
