Inflammatory Bowel Disease Q & A

What is IBD?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a general name that includes two specific diagnoses: Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Both of these conditions stem from a problem with the immune system which leads to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. The cause is probably a combination of genetic susceptibility, environmental factors and a dysregulated immune system.

What are the symptoms of IBD?

Crohn’s disease can show up as inflammatory patches in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative Colitis is characterized as inflammation of the colon and/or rectum. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, blood in the stool, weight loss (without trying) and fatigue.

How can Integrative medicine help IBD?

Dr. Standing would never suggest that your child stop taking medications prescribed by their gastroenterologist, but there are many facets of integrative medicine that have been shown to be effective in calming inflammation in the bowel. These may be related to diet, probiotics and botanicals and/or neutraceuticals as well as stress reduction.
