PANDAS = Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infection

PANS = Pediatric Acute Neuropsychiatric Syndrome

Both are syndromes of brain inflammation marked by misdirected autoimmune responses to streptococcus, other bacterial, viral, environmental or immune dysfunction.

PANDAS and PANS are clinical diagnoses with abrupt the onset of obsessive compulsive disorder and/or restricted food intake occurring with two or more of the following accompanying symptoms:

  • Behavioral regression
  • Phobias/Anxiety
  • Frequent urination
  • Sensory issues
  • Motor regression such as worsening handwriting
  • Deteriorating school performance
  • Sleep disturbance

Symptoms are remitting and relapsing
